Tour description

A challenging two-day high-mountain hike from the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe across glaciers and alpine passes, through the Swiss Silvretta range to the Jamtalhütte, and back to the starting point via the Getschnerscharte.

On the first day, the route takes you from Silvrettasee via the Wiesbadener Hut and the Vermunt Glacier into Switzerland, continuing via Furcletta and Val Urschai to the Futschöl Pass and finally to the Jamtal Hut. On the second day, you’ll ascend from the Jamtal Hut to the Getschnerscharte and make your way back through high-alpine terrain to the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe. The tour passes through some pathless and glaciated terrain and requires extensive alpine experience.

Getting to the starting point

The Silvretta High Alpine Road is expected to remain closed until summer 2030. Therefore, in the summer, you cannot reachthe Bielerhöhe from the Montafon by car or public transportation via the High Alpine Road; instead, you must take the Vermuntbahn from Partenen and then transfer to the tunnel bus.

You can find more information here.

By Public Transportation

With the Landbus Montafon and the Montafonerbahn, you can travel comfortably and flexibly throughout the valley. The train and bus connect the towns regularly, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find suitable connections in the cleVVVer mobil schedule app. The nearest stop is “Partenen Bergbahnen Talstation.” From there, you can reach the Vermuntbahn valley station in just a few minutes on foot.

By car

By car, drive to Partenen to the valley stations of the Vermuntbahn or Tafamuntbahn. The two valley stations are just a few minutes’ walk apart. Parking is available near the valley stations. Since parking conditions may change due to construction work, please follow the current on-site signage and check in advance for available parking spaces.

Important Information

This two-day tour is a challenging high-alpine expedition and not a classic mountain hike. Especially in the area of the Vermunt Glacier, the route leads through glaciated and, in some places, unmarked terrain. Alpine experience, reliable navigation skills, and a complete set of glacier gear are required.

We strongly recommend that you undertake this tour only with a state-certified mountain guide. Glaciers, snowfields, and high-alpine crossings can change significantly over the course of the summer, which is why current conditions must be assessed immediately before the tour.

You should reserve your lodging well in advance.

Tips

In Val Urschai and at Plan da Mattun, take a moment to look beyond the landscape: Archaeological finds show that people were already visiting this high-Alpine region more than 10,000 years ago. Later pottery finds also suggest that the region was already being used for economic purposes around 3,000 years ago. Thus, the tour not only takes you across several alpine passes but also through a surprisingly ancient cultural landscape.

Plan your stages with plenty of extra time. Especially on a tour across glaciers and several high-alpine passes, weather, snow conditions, and trail conditions have a greater impact on your daily schedule than the number of kilometers.
