Tour description

Time for views

Greetings! I am Paul. Over a hundred years ago, I worked and lived as a customs officer in the remote mountain village of Gargellen. I was a uniformed guard of the Austrian border with Switzerland, which at the end of the 19th century was more than just a dotted line on a hand-drawn map. It was a green border that was strictly guarded by customs officers. A place that is still the subject of countless stories and mysterious legends today: of cunning smugglers, courageous mountaineers and poor farmhands and maids who wandered hopefully to the farms in Prättigau in search of work. And even of secret love affairs that neither the mountain nor the national border could separate - because love, if it is strong enough, can overcome any obstacle.

Here, where the mighty peak of the Madrisa seems to gaze silently and watchfully over the Gargellen valley, begins the story I would like to tell you today.

Join me on my patrol and follow the signposts with the name "PAUL" - together we will explore old smugglers' paths and take a break on the sun-warmed natural stone benches in the atrium.

Here you can find the current overview map of the Gargellner Schafberg Trails.
